The importance of Juicing in illness (Diet series part 2)

October 5, 2012

Juicing is described as the process of extracting juice from plant tissues such as fruit or vegetables. As a kid I was exposed to juicing by "mr. juiceman himself" , Jay Kordich. I remember watching him on TV sporting sweats and standing on a table full of fruits and vegetables and a Juicer.  A few years ago I had dinner with him and his lovely wife and we exchanged ideas about juicing (ok, I just listened).  In the last twenty years we have become most conscious of how helpful and beneficial juicing can be to our overall health more then any other time in our modern history.  What is the best protocol in regards to juicing for cancer patients and patients with degenerative diseases and autoimmune diseases? There is not one set protocol, each patient is different and their stage of their illness should always be taken into consideration. Learning from ancient cultures and modern experts such as Mr. Kordich, Mrs. Gerson(of the Gerson Diet) and others as well as my clinical experience with numerous patients over the years has lead me to the following conclusions about juicing with regards to patients with the types of diseases listed above.
1. Avoid vegetables with high sugar content such as sweet potatoes, yams, carrots and beets. Wheatgrass is first choice to juice in this category. Scand J Gastroenterol . 2002;37:444-9.
2.  If juicing is an option or part of the diet these should be included:
all berries, rhubarb, watermelons,  and green apples. Most other fruits have higher sugar content.
3.  Noni can be use when potassium levels are being monitor on the patient and
the patient's renal function is not compromised. University of Hawaii, cancer research center January 8, 2004.
4. Moringa leaves are excellent sources of nourishment on malnourish patients, or patients that have no appetite or can not eat. The juicing of these leaves can be given via port and or GI tube on NPO patients. There are many sites that sale the extract or tonic, like anything else check for toxic chemicals in these products.
5. Pomegranate one of the highest anti-oxidant fruit. Helps in reducing metastasis, especially in prostate cancer.  Lei Wang American Society for Cell Biology on Dec. 12, 2010.
